My Favorite Part of Today

I realize that today is not over yet, but I'm pretty sure that I've already experienced my favorite moment of the day. Caleb approaches me, holding this old book he's found in my classroom.

"Mrs. Hoodenpyle, look at this. This is the dumbest thing I've ever seen."

  3. Donald J. Sobol wrote this book in 1966.
You need to know that in 1966:
*President Kennedy had been assassinated only three years prior.
*The United States was in Vietnam with almost 500,000 troops. Every guy dreaded getting his draft notice in the mail.
*Racial riots were EVERYWHERE. These were extremely large, dangerous, and volatile uprisings all across the country in many large cities. The Black Panthers and their "Black Power!" were big.
*Ronald Reagan became the governor of California.
*Muhammed Ali was still known as Cassius Clay.
*The first episode of Star Trek was televised.
*The average household income was $6,900.00
average new house price was $14,200.00
selling tag for average new car was $2,650.00
average gas price was $0.32 per gallon
    *Popular musicians/songs in 1966:
The Mamas and the Papas (Monday Monday)
    The Beach Boys (Good Vibrations)
    The Monkees (I'm a Believer)
Simon and Garfunkel (Sounds of Silence)
The music was all about innocent happiness or politically charged protest songs or drugs.
*And it was a-okay to give your child a crazed dog with two knives strapped to its head.
